Bulls bits

TAMPA -- Pitcher John Gorham struck out a career-high 12 batters Tuesday when the Bulls beat UCF 9-4 in Orlando.

The performance helped USF improve to 20-13 on the year and erase the sting of losing two of three to Conference USA foe TCU last weekend.

With the win, Gorham, a senior right-hander, became the seventh pitcher in school history to record 250 strikeouts. He moved into a tie with Jon Alexander (1986-87) at No. 6 on the school's career list with 251. He also tied Mark Roberts (1994-96) at No. 4 on the career win list with his 27th.

Gorham (5-4) scattered eight hits in seven innings and did not walk a batter. He struck out five consecutive at one point, including all three batters in the fourth inning. He had plenty of support as the Bulls led 6-0 after two innings and never looked back.

"Everything was working again," Gorham said. "I thought I pitched a little bit smarter and I went inside a few more times. I was getting ahead and I didn't walk anybody."

USF begins a three-game series at league rival Cincinnati today.

MEN'S GOLF: Tele Wightman won medalist honors in a playoff at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championships on Tuesday in Aiken, S.C.

His performance led the Bulls to a second-place team finish in the 15-team field. The Bulls shot 851 in 54 holes to place second behind Virginia Tech, which shot 836.

Wightman shot a career-best 9-under 204 and defeated Johnson Wagner of Virginia Tech in sudden death. Wightman carded rounds of 68, 69 and 67.

USF headed into the final round three shots behind Virginia Tech, and even with a final round of 290, the Bulls were able to hold that spot, finishing three shots ahead of third-place Kansas.

In addition to Wightman's win, Jay Cavanagh tied for 18th with 213 after rounds of 68, 71 and 74. Ricky Carrillo (215) tied for 25th, Ryan Shears (219) tied for 39th and Brad Quiri (224) tied for 56th.
