Games to watch

Tampa Jesuit at CC Catholic

WHEN: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK: CCC tunes up for the district playoffs and an expected extended playoff run with the first of two games against Tampa powers (the other is against defending state champion Tampa Catholic on Thursday). Jesuit is 20-4 and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A (CCC has already beaten the No. 2 team, Jacksonville Bolles). At a recent tournament in Sarasota, the Tigers beat the Nos. 7, 8 and 9 teams in 5A, and Wednesday beat 6A No. 4 Sarasota. CCC is 21-1 with the loss coming to mighty Dunedin. The Marauders, coming off a Ryan Webb no-hitter Wednesday against River Ridge, are ranked No. 3 in Class 2A.

PCAC Championship

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: South representative

OUTLOOK: Dunedin will represent the North and either Northeast or Pinellas Park will represent the South. The Patriots are in the driver's seat and can clinch a spot in the game with a win over Lakewood on Monday. A loss sends the Vikings to the game.

The Super Seven

With last week's ranking in parenthesis

1. (1) Dunedin (24-0) -- Did you know the Falcons are the last undefeated team remaining in the state? Did you know the Falcons are No. 4 in the first USA Today poll released Tuesday? Now you do.

2. (3) Clearwater Central Catholic (21-1) -- The one place the Marauders have the Falcons beat is on Web sites. Check out www.cccbaseball.com, which is just a hair better than Dunedin's www.dunedinbaseball.com. We applaud both.

3. (4) Northside Christian (23-2) -- Four players are hitting better than .500 and another four are over .400, which helps explain much of the Mustangs' success. Or maybe it's the 88 innings pitched and four earned runs allowed by Todd Redmond and Shawn Ahern.

4. (2) East Lake (21-4) -- The Eagles had a tough task last week with back-to-back games against Dunedin and Countryside, and have already lost this week to Pinellas Park. With districts looming, it's time to turn things around.

5. (5) Seminole (17-6) -- The Warhawks are sailing along under the radar. Watch out.

6. (6) Pinellas Park (17-7) -- What a week for The Park, winners of eight of nine including a 9-7 victory over East Lake. They might be 5-5 in the district, but the Patriots have officially become the team you don't want to play in the tournament.

7. (NR) Countryside (12-9) -- The Cougars keep popping in and out of our rankings. Let's see if they can hang around this time. Guys?

Pinellas Park vs. Dunedin?

The Patriots came into the week third in the PCAC South Division. They then proceeded to knock off 4-0 Osceola on Tuesday, and Thursday beat 6-0 Northeast to move into first place (not to mention a win in between over East Lake).

Now 5-1 in the conference, Pinellas Park needs to beat Lakewood on Monday to earn the right to play Dunedin for the PCAC championship. If the Patriots finish 6-1, they win the tiebreaker against Northeast because of their head-to-head win.

Thursday afternoon, the Patriots pulled out a back-and-forth win over Northeast with two runs in the seventh inning. After Phil Catalan put the Vikings ahead 5-4 with a two-run single in the top of the inning, the Patriots retaliated with a leadoff triple by Ryan Gonzalez. Cody Gelwick scored him with a fly ball that was dropped, and scored the game-winner a few pitches later when sophomore Kenny Almeida (who homered earlier) ripped a single down the leftfield line.
