Fall for Arts Alive!
We know the arts are very much alive and thriving here, but the point is made more emphatically during Arts Alive! From Saturday through Nov. 10, special attention is called to St. Petersburg's many cultural organizations.
Most of the events, such as ongoing exhibitions at galleries and museums, the Florida Orchestra's Blue Jeans Concert on Saturday and American Stage's production of Over the River and Through the Woods, would be going on anyway; they're just getting an extra boost from the Arts Alive! promotion.
The new event is FLUX, a neighborhood arts showcase presented by First Night St. Petersburg. First Night executive director Pat Mason brought the idea here from Pittsburgh, where there are regular FLUX festivals to celebrate artists and neighborhoods. To further the Pittsburgh theme, Mason found a distributor to donate Iron City beer for FLUX.
FLUX, featuring bands including the Gita, above, starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the historic shuffleboard courts, 528 Mirror Lake Drive. Admission is $5.
Also Saturday, participating museums are free to all Pinellas County residents. Riders who pay $1 to ride the pink downtown Looper to a museum can get a coupon for a free return fare.
The Pier also will have a festival with arts, crafts and student performances 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Events Nov. 9 include the monthly downtown gallery hop and a fall festival at the Science Center. Brochures with a schedule are available at museums and galleries, or go to the city's Web site, www.stpete.org, or call (727) 893-7111.
