Damage still afoot on walkway
By JACKIE RIPLEY © St. Petersburg Times, published July 28, 2000 KEYSTONE -- Residents behind Austin Davis Library on Wayne Road were thrilled when county officials built a wooden walkway between their neighborhood and Gunn Highway. It was a safe and picturesque way for children to walk from their homes to the library or Keystone Park. But after a car crash left a 25-foot gap in the nearly quarter-mile walkway, children from Keystone Terrace and Lakes of Keystone were forced to "walk along the road to get the library or the park," said Albert Darby, whose children regularly used the wooden sidewalk. "They put barricades up but they've never been back to fix it." Darby said the damage occurred about three months ago. "We've looked at this every day," he said. "It's been too long." County officials said the walkway is scheduled for repairs, though officials were not certain when. "Those wooden walkways are coming back to haunt us," said Steve Valdez, the county's community relations manager.
