Police seek bank robber
By JAMIE JONES SPRING HILL -- Authorities took out a warrant Friday for the arrest of David Wayne Potts, who is accused of robbing a Bank of America branch on Spring Hill Drive Thursday. The 36-year-old Hernando County man allegedly walked into the bank wearing a sweat suit and a ball cap at about 11:30 a.m., mumbled for a teller to give him hundreds and fifties, and indicated that he had a gun. The Sheriff's Office said the robber fled on foot from the bank at 6023 Spring Hill Drive with about $1,800. Nine employees and eight customers were inside when the robbery occurred. A teller, Michael Daniels, told authorities the robber spoke with slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. Deputies spent the day searching for the suspect, including at his mother's house, but had not found him by Friday evening. Another bank employee, Tamara Boyea, told investigators she saw the robber leave the bank and said she recognized him from a previous bank she had worked for. She told authorities the robber had a red birthmark on his right cheek. Potts has a similar mark, investigators said. State records show Potts, of Brook Ridge, west of Brooksville, was sentenced in 1999 to four years in prison for robbery and was under supervision in Pasco County. Records show he also has served time for grand theft and possession of narcotics. -- Times staff writer Jamie Jones covers law enforcement in Hernando County and can be reached at (352) 754-6114 or by e-mail at jjones@sptimes.com. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
